The game hardware is built using a card rack system. There are six cards in the rack:
The Game and Pattern boards are unique to Gorf. The remaining boards are common to other Midway card rack games like Wizard of Wor.
There are two version of the Gorf program (that I know of). The programs differ in game difficulty, bugs, and game level behavior. Level by level, here are the differences that I am aware of, assuming the same DIP switch settings and number of credits:
| Mission | Original ROMs | Updated ROMs |
| Astro Battles | Rows of invaders descend much lower with each subsequent level than the original ROMs. | |
| Laser Attack | A bug allows your ship to be safe from the laser ships in the far left side of the screen. "Wing" ships fall back into formation before attacking again. | The bug is no longer present that allows your ship to avoid the laser on the left side. "Wing" ships do not always fall back into formation after attacking. |
| Galaxians | The Galaxians always "re-rack", or move back into formation after attacking. | The Galaxians do not always fall back into formation after an attack. Near the end of the mission, the ships continously roll back from the top of the screen and continue their attack. |
| Space Warp | There are more attacking ships in the "warp" after the first level than in the updated version. | After the first level, the attacks are much more violent with more enemy shots fired very close together. |
| Flagship | No major changes noted | No major changes noted |
As a result of the Update ROM, game play for an experienced player becomes incredibly difficult. After Space General, the number of enemy shots increases dramatically.
